Composer, conductor, professor of the Moscow Conservatoire; Honoured Doctor of Cambridge University, Corresponding Member at the French Academy of Fine Arts. Author of 10 operas among which are "Eugene Onegin", "The Queen of Spades", "Iolanta"; ballets "Swan Lake", "The Sleeping Beauty", "The Nutcracker"; six symphonies and a host of other symphonic and chamber pieces, and 104 romances. Died in St. Petersburg soon after the premiere of his 6th "Pathetic" symphony performed in the hall of the Nobility Assembly where he conducted the orchestra.
